Gwen Frost goes to Mythos Academy, where myths and magic comes to life. Her fellow students are descendants of gods and goddesses and each have powers of their own. Overall, I liked Gwen despite all her faults. At first, she was a bit judgmental toward her fellow students and very bitter, but what do you expect? Though she has a gift, psychometry, she didn’t grow up in a magical world. Instead, she went to a public high school where everyone was normal, so being suddenly rooted from everything she knows can put a damper on anyone’s attitude.
I love Gwen’s snarkiness and sarcasm and more often than not she made me laugh out loud. I also really liked that she accepted her gift and used it freely, instead of always struggling with accepting who she is. At first, she didn’t believe in all the magic mumbo jumbo at Mythos, but throughout the book we slowly see Gwen’s journey from an unbeliever to a believer. I enjoyed every minute of Gwen’s journey as she slowly discovers that there’s a lot more to herself and to the myths than she refused to believe.
Of course the book wouldn’t be complete with the love interest! Logan freaking Quinn!! As Gwen likes to call him! Logan’s a Spartan. Yep, like the ones from 300. Even at Mythos Academy, everyone steers clear of the Spartans. Born warriors, the deadly Spartans can take anything and use it as a weapon. Logan is the strongest at Mythos, and the resident hottie. Logan didn't appear as much as I’d like, but every time he shows up and flashes that sexy little grin at Gwen I had butterflies in my stomach! I love that he can be a badass in battle but also get embarrassed at times with Gwen. I seriously can’t wait to read more about Logan in the next book!!
My love of mythology is what had me reading this in the first place. I love how all the gods and goddesses from different pantheons are all mixed together here. However, some of it does sound a bit unbelievable and it was hard to get into at first. A lot of terms were thrown around. With Gwen’s blithe attitude toward the entire magic mumbo jumbo, it takes away the believability of the world building from the reader too. I can’t really take the magic and myths seriously because Gwen doesn’t take them seriously.
The most frustrating part of the book is the school aspect. Really, apparently no matter where you go, high school is the same. Mythos Academy has the same cliques as your average high school and no high school would be complete without the Queen Bee and her followers. Gwen has some brush-ups against these popular kids. I was expecting a lot more action in the school, considering these are kids training to be warriors, but a lot was overshadowed by these cliched high school aspects.
In short, mostly I had a lot of fun reading Touch of Frost and can’t wait for the next series. I’d recommend it to readers looking for a new twist on mythologies!
Synopsis: My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.Review:
But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died...
